By Alison Motluk WHITE people who see television reports of white criminals become progressively more likely to remember them as black people over time, according to a researcher in Pennsylvania. Mary Beth Oliver at Pennsylvania State University in University Park asked 60 white undergraduates to watch a 30-minute newscast. One 30-second story was about the murder of a child and featured a wanted poster for the suspect. Another featured someone who cheated on a disability claim, also with a wanted poster. Half the students were shown a white suspect as the violent criminal and a black suspect as the cheat, while the remainder were shown the reverse. Immediately after viewing the newscast, the volunteers were shown a series of mug shots, including a photo of the murderer, one of the cheat, plus pictures of two white and two black men. The students were asked how confident they were that each photo was of the murder suspect. Three months later, with no prior warning, they were asked to repeat the identification. In the first test, no one from either group of volunteers misidentified the race of the murder suspect. But after three months, more than a third of the volunteers who were shown a white murder suspect were reasonably confident that they had been shown a black man wanted for the murder. None of the volunteers who were shown a black murder suspect subsequently implicated a white man ( Journal of Communication, vol 4, p 46). The problem may be even worse in the real world, Oliver warns, where people pay less attention to what they see on TV. “There’s a lot more room for this kind of confusion,
